MAYPOP PASSIONFLOWER
Passiflora incarnata North American Passionflower or Maypop as it is known in the Appalachian region where it originates, has stunning and exotic looking blossoms. It is a climbing vine that will naturalize on a fence or trellised area. The vine produces large purple intricate flowers with pronounced anthers and stigmas in the center and a spectacular array of filaments and petals in shades of lavender, purple and white. This bright wavy petal structure attracts bees through the growing season pollinating the flowers maturing to sweet edible fruits. The three lobed leaves are large and shade producing, making an attractive privacy screen, or living wall. Believed to have sedative qualities, the whole aerial portion when in flower can be harvested and dried for a soothing nighttime tea. This herbaceous perennial vine will reach 6-8 feet in sun or part shade and blooms throughout the growing season from mid-summer through frost. Hardy in zones 5–9.
