Compass Plant
Compass Plant, Silphium laciniatum
Perennial
A towering queen of the midwestern prairies related to sunflowers, they can grow to 8’ high and produce a profusion of small yellow flowers. Used by native tribes as an expectorant for coughs. Aldo Leopold once said, “What a thousand acres of Silphiums looked like when they tickled the bellies of the buffalo is a question never again to be answered, and perhaps not even asked.” May he be proved wrong.Â
