About-Â This heirloom variety will produce a 10″-15″ long fruit with a round bulb and narrow neck, perfect for drying and ladle-making. Enjoy this timeless tradition grown for thousands of years.
When and Where to Plant– Direct sow 2/3 seeds per space / hill once soil temps have reached 70ºF. Prefers rich, loose, well-drained soils.
Care and Harvest– Water well 1-2 times per week. Provide fertilizer based on soil test. For drying, harvest fruits after they receive 2-3 frosts. Leaves, stems and fruit should all be varying shades of brown. Allow to dry for 2-4 months in an area with good ventilation. Discard any soft or rotten fruit. If mold begins to develop wipe off with a light bleach solution. Gourds are dry when they rattle and weight very little.Â
